An Overview of Chinese Medicine

By Joshua Margolis, Licensed Acupuncturist

Chinese medicine is a safe and effective method of diagnosis and treatment used for thousands of years. Branches of Chinese medicine include:

  • Acupuncture: Inserting fine needles into specific points on the body’s surface to promote healing and relieve pain. Adjunctive techniques include adding heat or mild electrical stimulation to the needles, and cupping, the use of vacuum cups to promote circulation and relax tight muscles.
  • Herbal medicine: The use of traditional and modern herbal formulas to treat both symptoms and the roots of disease. At Hill Park, we have an extensive pharmacy of over 300 pharmaceutical-grade herbal extracts allowing us to create custom compound remedies for each patient. Additionally, we carry nearly a hundred modern and traditional herbal prescriptions as pills to treat a wide variety of complaints.
  • Dietary therapy: Eat the right foods for you. Today this includes using high quality nutritional support such as vitamins, minerals, superfoods and other useful substances such as glucosamine sulfate and amino acids.
  • Manual therapy: Gentle massage, bodywork and stretches to improve mobility and reduce pain.
  • Exercise: Traditionally this was qigong and daoin (Chinese yoga). Today we include modern exercise and neuromuscular rehabilitation exercises for maximum effect.
Benefits of acupuncture and Chinese medicine:
  • Relieve acute and chronic pain
  • Increase overall feeling of wellbeing
  • Increase energy
  • Reduce stress

In Chinese medicine it is believed that body has its own wisdom. In other words we all know inside what health is. The purpose of treatment is to unblock any obstacles to healing, which can be mental, emotional or physical. Treatment involves using the least invasive interventions possible to unlock the innate healing potential inside us all.
